Annette is an MD Phd in biochemistry. Her supervisor, Dr. Dawling is watching her prepare bacterial cells for incubation in test tubes. It is Annette's first day in the lab so she is a little nervous and doesn't exactly like Dr. Dawling breathing down her neck. Dr. Dawling is a strict and authoritarian women but she thinks that Annette has potential and will be a great scientist. Although the believes in Annette, she doesn't show it, and Annette feels she is constantly disapproving. Annette is constantly ruminating over her decision to go into research and doesn't know if it suits her personality. To do research you have to have a great belief in what you are doing and Annette doesn't know if she can work without tangible rewards and reinforcement for the rest of her life. She worries she will never discover anything of value. Annette worked really hard to get where she is now. Dr. Dawling is only doing science because as a young girl her father died and she grew up wanting to have to ability to discover a cure to the disease her father died of. Annette will go on to be a brilliant scientist and Dr. Dawling will reveal herself as a loving and supportive mentor.
